LOCH DHU

Loch Dhu Plantation is part of a tract of land that dates to a 1749 grant from the King of England to William Kirk. The name Loch Dhu (Black Lake) was taken from a mill pond or lake that was built on the property long before Lake Marion was formed. Loch Dhu is located in northwestern Berkeley County in the Cross area approximately six miles east of Eutaw Springs near the Orangeburg County line. One tract consists of an 8.94-acre parcel that fronts on Lake Marion and two contiguous parcels totaling 94.21 acres.

The 94.21-acre tract includes the plantation house which was built in 1812 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. During the Civil War, the house was used as a hospital for the Confederate wounded. The original part of the house contains some 3,000 square feet.
