Lamar River Ranch
There are lots of great places to hunt trophy whitetails in Oklahoma and at the top of that list is a stretch of the South Canadian River bottom that runs from Calvin, OK to the Indian Nation Turnpike. If you look at an aerial of this part of the state, you can see how a wooded ridge drops south from the North Canadian River basin and connects to the dense growth of timber along this reach of the South Canadian River. At the downstream edge of the intersection of these two wildlife corridors is the Land Doctors latest listing, the 368-acre Lamar River Ranch.

This portion of the river features steep forested hillsides that pinch in tightly to the slender ribbon of cropland along the river's edge. Consequently, this core area has tremendous wildlife populations that use the large blocks of timber for cover, the cropland for forage and the river and ridge corridors for safe passage. In addition, Lamar River Ranch is located at the end of a dead-end road and is surrounded by large ranches to the south and east. The combination of location, large neighbors and the river makes this ranch feel extremely isolated and protected from the outside world.
Because of this ideal setting, you see types of animals that you don't normally encounter in this part of Oklahoma. A herd of free-range elk is flourishing in the area and a large bull was killed on the ranch a few years ago. Bears are also found in this area and have been photographed on the ranch before. In addition, you see lots of deer. In fact, we see deer, including some quality bucks, every time we drive around on the property. On the day we filmed, we saw a good number of does and bucks. In addition, there are plenty of trail cam pictures and trophy shots of more elusive mature bucks that are on the property.
For the duck hunter, there is great potential to develop the river's edge into a wetland. The ranch is on the inside curve of the river bend where the water velocities are their slowest. As the river has migrated south and east, it has left behind old channel cuts that are surrounded by vegetation and easily flooded to create some fantastic waterfowl habitat. We think a small amount of management and improvement of this area would yield some great benefits for those who want to take advantage of the flyway. During the summer, there is a large beach of white sand here that would be the perfect place for the kids to play along the river or ride ATVs.
Speaking of management, this ranch was initially developed and managed by one of the most skilled, patient, and thoughtful wildlife steward clients we've had. Years of studying wildlife travel patterns and how the animals related to the fields was followed by fine tuning and tweaking of the food plots. This patient process of observation and improvement led to the setup that the current owner has managed since purchasing. In addition to the wildlife already mentioned, this is a truly fun place to hunt wild turkeys. Quiet trails run through the mature hardwood ridges connecting upland food plots to the river bottom below. Spring mornings explode with the sounds of gobblers from their roosts in tall oaks along the small feeder creeks that lead down to the river. Sneaking along these trails in pursuit of a big tom turkey will be a delight for you, especially if you have children or grandchildren who have never hunted turkeys.
Although the property is located an easy hour and a half drive from OKC or Tulsa and three hours from Dallas, you will still want a place to stay while you are there. Fortunately, there is a nice two-bedroom, two-bathroom cabin with kitchen, living area and garage, plus a second cabin with bunk space and kitchenette where extra friends and family can stay. A storage barn, storage container and carport are there to protect your supplies and equipment from the elements. There is also a meat cooler conveniently located by the barn where you can hang your deer until you are ready to process it. Lastly, there is a pergola with fireplace overlooking the creek behind the cabin that is the perfect place to end the day.
