Costilla, NM 87524(Taos County)

The farm is watered from the historic Mesa Ditch, utilizing priority water rights dating from 1853. Water delivery to the farm has been consistent and reliable for over 100 years. 50 acres are currently under production in alfalfa with the remaining 50 acres ready to be planted. The farm can produce up to four cuttings per year and the 50 acres currently in production produce up to 900 small bales per cutting. Those numbers should increase proportionally if the remaining farm was put back into cultivation.

Hunting

The ranch lies in GMU 55A, which is managed as a Special Management zone. The current owner has been issued ten elk permits. Special Management zones exist in quality elk habitat areas, where the majority of land is owned by private entities. Private-land authorizations on these ranches are allocated through a negotiation between the Department of Game and Fish and the ranch managers, meaning there are opportunities to adjust and increase the elk permits through collaboration with Game and Fish.

The farm is approximately 45 minutes north of Taos, NM and approximately 2 minutes from the Colorado state line. Access to world class Rocky Mountain skiing and trophy trout fishing is an hour or less away. Costilla serves as the entrance into the renowned and pristine Valle Vidal. With over 100,000 acres of pristine scenery, The Valle Vidal (The Valley of Life) Unit of the Carson National Forest offers breathtaking vistas of high peaks, forests, and alpine meadows. There are endless recreation opportunities in this area for hiking, camping, fishing, biking, horseback riding, and hunting. See plentiful wildlife and beautiful summer wildflowers. Some areas are closed from December to May due to snow conditions and elk protections.
