The history of the American West comes to life at the Upper Green River Ranch, located between Jackson and Pinedale, Wyoming. When some of John Jacob Astors fur traders first camped in this valley, it was approximately five years after Lewis and Clarks journey to the Pacific. What they found in 1812 was a pristine mountain valley flanked with soaring peaks and richly populated with fish and wildlife. Today, that description still matches the Upper Green River Ranch, home to trophy trout, moose, elk, deer, antelope and occasional wolves and grizzlies visiting from the neighboring mountains. Operating on 17,000 total acres (12,040) deeded, Upper Green River Ranch is a vast high country slice of unspoiled Wyoming that continues to maintain an extraordinary legacy of ranching, hunting and fishing.

Live water is abundant on the Upper Green River Ranch. Over four miles of the fabled Green River itself flow through the ranch and offer large river float and wade fishing for brown, cutthroat and rainbow trout up to several pounds. The ranch is adjacent to many additional miles of public fishing on the Green, and long float trips are possible, with the ranch as base. A major tributary, Beaver Creek, divides into three forks on the ranch and adds an additional 20 miles of winding stream capable of being explored with a flyrod for days. Several ponds also hold trout, including native Colorado River cutthroats. The angling values alone make this ranch a rare find. Trumpeter swans, waves of waterfowl, sand hill cranes and raptors also frequent these wetlands.

The rich meadowlands of the Green River valley have been carefully stewarded for generations for grass and hay production on the ranch. The owner estimates that approximately 3,053 acres are ditch irrigated, and an additional 3,083 acres are sub-irrigated. This healthy production has allowed the ranch to support 3,500 yearling cattle for 5-6 months of the year. The Upper Green River Ranch is completely outfitted for serious cattle production, with fencing, barns, corrals, scales and shipping pens fully in place and operational.

The historic ranch headquarters, the Hansen Place, is named for the family of Cliff Hansen, former Governor and Senator of Wyoming. It is a classic, vaulted ceiling house with views of the heart of the ranch in every direction. Its privacy is enhanced by a private wooden bridge crossing over the Green River. Three other homes, the Royce Place, the Wilson Place, and the Gransden Place, are scattered throughout this vast property and function as housing for ranch employees.

The broad meadowlands of the ranch offer views of three high mountain ranges, all of which are recreational meccas. The wildlife-rich Wyoming Range rises to the west, the Sawtooths of the Gros Venture Range to the north and the Wind River Range to the east. Trophy elk and moose hunting, in particular, is legendary in both of these ranges. Many consider the Wind Rivers to be Americas most spectacular mountain range, and its sheer granite peaks, glaciers and clear mountain lakes attract climbers, backpackers and anglers from all over the world. Locals claim there are more glaciers in The Winds than in Glacier National Park, including Mammoth Glacier sprawling in the shadow of Gannett Peak, the tallest in Wyoming just shy of 14,000 feet. Pinedale, a rustic mountain community with a jet ready airfield, lies at the foot of the Wind Rivers, and is only about 20 minutes from the ranch.

While the Upper Green River valley is in many ways iconic of the Old Wyoming, it is also less than an hours drive (via US 189) from Jackson, one of the Rockies most desirable resort communities. Jackson is connected by major airline service throughout the United States and offers top notch dining, lodging and entertainment. Only a few miles south of the ranchs location, the fur trading mountain men established their annual Rocky Mountain Rendezvous in the 1820s.
