Gerard Ranch offers some of the most picturesque settings in all of west Texas with its stunning bluffs, canyons, lakes and creek bottoms. The ranch is situated along the banks of North Croton Creek that meanders through the ranch for 5 miles offering many tributaries that provide a wildlife haven. The ranch has been cross fenced into 4 pastures to incorporate rotational grazing so not to over graze the ranch. The native pastures are strong and have been meticulously managed to ensure the native grass and browse are healthy and viable for years to come. Some of the many ranch improvements include adding 5 stock ponds and 2 lakes to the property for ample water supply during drought years. In addition multiple interior roads and low water crossings to Croton Creek have been added and maintained to allow easy access to all parts of the ranch.
Wildlife:
You will be hard pressed to find a property that has the hunting opportunities that this ranch offers-all under low fence free ranging Whitetail Deer, Elk, Red Stag, Aoudad, Quail, Turkey, and Hog, not to mention bobcat, coyote and the occasional mountain lion.
Since 2013 the ranch has been under the Texas Parks & Wildlife MLD management program for whitetail deer. Extensive Stewardship has been performed on the ranch to warrant the proper management of Whitetail deer year in and year out. This allows for a diverse type of whitetail hunting experience from September to February with your preference of gun, powder and bow.
Add in free ranging Red Stag, Elk and Aoudad that can be harvested at any time during the year and you have a true hunters paradise. There are over 60 acres of food plots and senderos, ranging from 6 acres to 12 acres in size with heavy cover surrounding them. Year round feeding program has been in place since 2013 through 10 meticulous placed protein and corn feeders with hunting towers in place. The ranch uses a blow-in type fill system feeders and 3.5 ton feed trailer to keep them filled year round along with a 30 ton feed bin making filling feeders a breeze.
GAME surveys for 2019-2020 seasons are available upon request. The Recent Fish survey from the 20 Acres Lake showed a healthy and thriving populations of Bass and other fish. The largest Bass weighed in at over 9.3 lbs and the average weight of these bass were 2 lbs over the statewide average.
Water:
The centerpiece of Gerard Ranch is a 20 acre lake built in 2016. This beautiful lake is situated in Smelter Canyon. Smelter Canyon Lake offers 20 depths at the dam with a flooded valley of 6 to 15 depths. This lake is stocked with Florida Bass and feeder fish to continue the growth of trophy bass. Currently the bass range in size from small to over 9.3 pounds in the short three years since the lake was built. There are 4 fish feeders that help maintain the feeder fish. On the banks of the lake sits a storage container to store fishing gear, kayaks and feed. A smaller 7 acre lake was also added in 2016, stocked with Blue Gill, Rednose and Flathead minnow.
There are 10 stock ponds scattered throughout the ranch ranging from half acre to one acre. 5 of the 10 have been newly added to the ranch to ensure the ease and amply supply of water for domestic and wildlife use.
The North Croton Creek is a wet weather creek fed by multiple tributaries from the ranch and neighboring properties. The creek flows from the West side of the ranch to the east side and is a corridor for wildlife to travel throughout the ranch and to and from the Brazos River.
Headquarters:
Headquarters consist of a new three bedroom two bath home and barn. All surrounded by an interior fence and cattle guard. The house is a modern 1,248 square foot new modular home with extensive additions and upgrades made to enhance this home and protect it for years to come.
A rock wainscot surrounds the base of the house. A metal canopy was added to cover the entire house extending out 20 on both sides for additional cover over the newly added beautiful wood deck. The deck looks over a small canyon with a feeder in place to enjoy the wildlife that frequently visit.
The Barn is over 1,600 square feet with four bays and an awning for the deer cleaning station. One bay offers a drive through easy access for storage of a large tractor and/or feed trailer, two bays that offer plenty of space for ATVs, vehicles and a shop.
The last bay houses a water harvesting containment system that provides water to the house and barn.
The annual rainfall for Stonewall/King County TX is 22, with a total 10,500 gallon storage system, this provides an ample supply of water year round. The drinking water runs through a state of the art water filtration system, involving a 3 stage sediment filtration, Ozone and UV sterilization system.
City water can be hauled to the ranch and purchased in Knox City TX. 1000 gallons of water in a trailer costs $6.00
Cattle:
Currently the land is under an active cattle grazing lease with a neighboring rancher which has to be honored through June 2020.
The lease produces an annual revenue of $12,240.
The family who lease the land are an established well respected, prominent ranching family in west Texas and are the finest people you will ever meet. They are self-sufficient and very easy to work with- they rotate the cattle throughout the year through the four pastures as we continue to produce healthy viable forage growth year round.
The cattle are stocked at a very conservative rate of one per 50 acres.The family has leases on the neighboring properties and as part of the lease agreement; they maintain all perimeter fencing to ensure cattle containment. There are two sets of good working cattle pens on the ranch. One features a covered working area with a cattle squeeze chute and a 40 container for storage.
There are two old homes sites at the entrance of the ranch, and they are not in use but offer a glimpse into the historical past of this area, and the serene Kiowa Peak in the distance. The renowned Four Sixes Ranch that use to border this ranch to the north to old swinging wood bridges that span the North Croton Creek to the old cowboy shelters cut in the wall of the canyons to offer some shelter during an unexpected storm.
