In a private setting with mountain and vineyard views, this country compound showcases a contemporary residence and a studio buildingboth rich in detail and with carefully selected materials. The designer was architect George Suyama of Seattles SuyamaPetersonDeguchi, who is a member of the College of Fellows of AIA. Georges architectural awards attest to his skill in completing memorable homes according to his philosophy:
By using a limited palette of materials, the logic of construction became more evident, adding to a sense of structural integrity and clarityarchitecture with elemental simplicity, where connecting to nature becomes more important. He uses the Japanese idea of borrowed landscape and by dissolving the boundaries between inside and outside, nature takes the place of decoration.

The main house has Fleetwood floor-to-ceiling glass doors, bringing nature into every room. The residence features a fabulous kitchen with a dramatic center island and an impressive great room overlooking the infinity-edge pool. The library, a luxurious master suite, gym, and a semi-detached guest suite complete the principal space. The guest suite, with a private bath and serene workspace, looks out to an enclosed planted garden.
The elegant use of simple forms and materials, together with a warm interior of smooth stucco walls, oak and concrete floors in high ceiling spaces creates a sense of calm refuge amid the vineyards and rolling hills of Sonoma Valley.
The swimming pool (25 meters x 12 feet) is both a swimmers paradise and a sublime reflecting pool, enhancing every morning view and every sunset.
The pool and expansive patios create opportunities for outdoor entertaining, both large and small.
The separate studio building features two large work studios (or bedrooms) and a full bath on the upper floorabove the small winery/garage space. The winery has been a US bonded facility and is adjacent to the two-acre, certified organic vineyard, planted to Petite Sirah and multiple clones of Zinfandel. Phil Freese, famed viticulturist (e.g. Opus One, To-Kalon), was the consulting viticulturist for the redesign and replanting in 2007-8. The owners wines have been frequent Gold medal winners in tasting competitions.
