From ancient times, the area around Tierra Amarilla in northern New Mexico has been valued for its exquisite livability. Centuries of habitation by native peoples established this fact. Manuel Martinez and companions built upon this legacy with the settling of the massive Tierra Amarilla Land Grant in 1832. Today, the 1,937-acre Red Rabbit Ranch captures the best of the Tierra Amarilla area on a property graced with extraordinary hunting and equestrian opportunities, mountain scenery and buildings that are the virtual definition of fine craftsmanship.
Situated on the flanks of the southern San Juan Mountains, Red Rabbi...
Situated on the flanks of the southern San Juan Mountains, Red Rabbit Ranch is a true mountain property, with elevations stretching from 8,500 feet to 10,300 feet. Abundant winter snows nourish a rich and varied ecosystem composed of meadows, spruce and pine forest, gambel oak and aspen groves. Numerous springs, ponds and the Tierra Amarilla Creek make the property a haven for wildlife of great variety. Wildlife photographers, hikers, hunters and snowmobilers alike will find a lifetime of exciting opportunities without ever needing to leave the property.
Big game hunters will be enticed by the Ranchs large herds of trophy mule deer and elk. Selective hunting, grazing management, and well-developed watering holes keep bragging-size mule deer in the 180 to 200+ inch class on the property. Not far behind are the trophy elk opportunities, with bull elk commonly scoring over 300 inches. Mule deer authorizations are available through the owner and the Ranch typically receives about 17 elk authorizations annually. In addition, solid populations of bear, mountain lion, turkey and grouse make their home here and provide other hunting opportunities year-round.
Improvements on the Ranch can only be described in terms of meticulous craftsmanship. The main residence is a 2-bedroom, 2-bath Swedish coped log home with remarkable attention to detail. It includes a vaulted ceiling Great Room with a stone fireplace that is reminiscent of old Western lodges, a custom-built kitchen highlighted with mesquite cabinetry that leads into a breakfast room that seats 6 people. A vintage style wet bar and Victorian style gas fireplace surround a seating area and adjoins a dining room with sweeping views of the mountains and seats 12 people. There is stairway access to the basement which could serve as a wine cellar. Vaulted ceilings continue into both the Master Bedroom and Guest Bedroom with en suite features. Two, 2-car detached garages complete the Main House area.
The Main House features alone would set Red Rabbit Ranch apart, but many would consider its 4,000-square foot barn its crowning jewel, making this property one of the finest equestrian facilities in this part of the state. The barn includes a full shop, 6 horse stalls, two of which have auxiliary heating for foaling, an 1100 sq. ft. upper hay loft, washroom and a tack room with 8 saddle racks secured by antique teak and iron doors. The barn floor has brick pavers and adding to the ambiance of the barn is a custom round stained glass window. Attached to the barn is a 2-bedroom, 1-bathroom, full kitchen, open concept living area perfect for a Ranch Manager or Guests. Other improvements with the horse lover in mind include three horse pastures with electric fencing, horse corrals, loafing sheds, a hay shed and a round pen. Of course, with nearly 2000 acres to its credit, high country trail riding on the Ranch is second to none.
