Most everyone has a preference when it comes to the type of habitat they hunt. Whether it be open fields to the densest pine thickets, we all differ. On the south end of Pulaski County sits 60 acres that encompasses a diverse range of habitats. The eastern half consists of nearly 25 acres of early successional habitat: Its very own microecosystem that would resemble the looks of a midwestern CRP field. The shoulder to head high mix of golden rod, ragweed, partridge pea, and mixture of bunchgrasses provide the excellent fawning cover, bedding, and exceptional quail habitat. This area offers the opportunity to be converted into row crops or the long-term investment of planted pines. Currently atop the hill sits a tower stand overlooking the vast rolling topography while also observing the nearly four acres of strategically placed winter food plot. As the property transitions from east to west the early successional habitat is met by an open stand of Loblolly Pines. Scattered throughout, one cannot help but notice the amount of buck sign, both fresh and of years gone by. Pines and cedars alike are stripped of their bark and most all low hanging limbs have a fresh scrape underneath. From the stand of Loblolly, the properties elevation begins to descend as we close in on the year-round flowing creek. Throughout the creek drain, habitat consists of a pine-hardwood mixture transitioning to a hardwood heavy makeup consisting of water oaks and sweetgums. From every corner of this property the one constant attribute, is evidence of a very healthy population of wildlife. This property is one that I would consider a target rich environment.
