The US Government has kept 160 acres nearby noted as a mineral withdrawal where no one can locate a claim nor prospect on that 160 acres. Though there is no sign of any government mining operation nor will there be, in that they would protect this acreage for those mineral deposits is a great sign for our claims here.

The government mineral withdrawal is also a way of protecting those 160 acres from any large, mining operation from coming in and disturbing the land to any large degree. The public is allowed on that 160 acres, but no prospecting can ever take place,

being our claims here have exclusive prospecting rights.

Best camping is just around the corner at Timberline Campground, that has campsites and vault toilets.

Nearby and in between the town of Grant and Bailey, The Lost Creek Wilderness is a 119,790-acre wilderness area located in central Colorado in Jefferson and Park counties south of the town of Bailey. The area is situated entirely within the boundaries of the Pike National Forest.

With an approved BLM Plan of Operation, a building can be built on the land: any building that benefits and improves the claim, though you cannot live on a mining claim.

As stated by the BLM, this can be the "construction of a building, road, fence, or enclosure necessary for mining."

Current usage, is what the BLM calls, Casual Use: panning, shovel, rock hammer, metal detector, creek powered sluice box, where no permission nor permit is needed to camp and prospect.

On trips to the claim, we gathered in and around the creek, approx. 1/4 of an ounce of gold, being worth about $300. Someone with more time may find more. Gold prices are over $1200/ounce. Your ownership is legally conveyed via a Quit Claim deed, and legally recorded with the BLM and Park County. A Quit Claim deed is the required legal document per the BLM. Each year, on or before September 1st, you need to file a simple form with the Bureau of Land Management, along with $330. By doing this, you keep the claim forever. Need 2 names on your deed. You must be a current US citizen with a US address to own a mining claim in the US.

Gold always occurs in gravels in the metallic state and when so found has various physical characteristics. Gold is dense and heavy, it has a characteristic metallic color, and it is soft and easily malleable (it is easily formed by hammering). These are the characteristics used by prospectors to identify gold in the field.

Placer gold occurs on the claim as small grains derived from gossan formed by weathering, and oxidation of the gold, copper and iron rich veins. Gold also occurs as grains flakes and small nuggets derived from the erosion of mineralized fault zones on, and upstream from the claim.
