Ojibwa people were the first to occupy this region prior to European exploration. By the early 1600s, French trappers began entering the territory. The first written report about Ontonagon County and its copper was made in 1661 by a French Jesuit missionary, Father René Mesnard. In 1665, Father Claude Allouez reported about the now famous Ontonagon Boulder: a boulder of pure copper, which was located on the West Branch of the Ontonagon River and venerated by the local Indians.
