The name first appeared as a name for a river called Nantounagon on a 1670 French map. Alternatively, it is said to be derived from the Ojibwa onagon, which means "dish" or "bowl". Just two miles away is a popular entrance to the Ottawa National Forest. This forest covers 988,000 acres and provides public access to lakes, rivers and streams, waterfalls, wetlands, old growth forests, as well as wildlife - whitetail deer, bear, and birds are abundant. A short distance away is the East Branch of the Ontonagon River, for some excellent trout fishing. This river is fast and runs through some very wild country. The banks are high and the river passes many high hills. Trail No. 12, a main East-West Multi-Use State Trail passes right by the property for miles and miles of trails for motorized "outdoor enthusiasts". If you love mining history, Mass City/Greenland and the fabulous Adventure Copper Mine is in this vicinity and now offers underground tours. Old copper mine workings dot the Mass bluffs. Most are accessible only by poor roads. Rockland Mines and Townsite mines are a short drive away, and two of the richest copper mines in the county, the National and the Minnesota are also located near by. The back of the property is a grassy field that stretches off into the distance - The vista across these farmlands is beautiful. A neighbor has been making hay off this parcel for several years. A small seasonal creek that runs near one border of the property attracts wildlife. This Home and Grounds will need "Clean Up" - But the property might be perfect for a small group of hunters.
