The Western region of New York has some of the best nature views in the state and is home to one of the world's most well-known attractions, Niagara Falls, which is the collective name for three waterfalls on the border of Canada and the United States.

One area to visit in this region is the Finger Lakes which is a grouping of 11 finger shaped lakes that attract visitors year round. The larger lakes are Canandaigua Lake, Cayuga Lake, Owasco Lake, Keuka Lake, Seneca Lake, and Skaneateles Lake while the smaller lakes include Canadice Lake, Conesus Lake, Hemlock Lake, Honeoye Lake, and Otisco Lake. This region is also well known for the wine country and the award winning wines it produces. Outdoor recreation is abundant in this region including Watkins Glen State Park and its 19 waterfalls.

Another area to visit is the Niagara Frontier which includes the five counties of Niagara County, Orleans County, Erie County, Genesee County, and Wyoming County. Included in this area is Letchworth State Park. Within the park, there are three large waterfalls on the Genesee River and as many as 50 waterfalls found on tributaries that flow into it. The gorge formed by the river, is also referred to as the "Grand Canyon of the East". Niagara Falls flows through Niagara Falls State Park which is America's oldest state park.

The southwest area of this region is the Chautauqua-Allegheny which includes the three counties of Chautauqua County, Cattaraugus County, and Allegany County. This area offers Allegany State Park which is New York's largest state park.
