Opal Butte Ranch
Location: 25 miles N.E. of Spray, Oregon on Highway 206 and 25 miles
S.W. of Heppner, Oregon on Highway 206
Size: 10,000 acres m/l
Elevation: 3900’-5000’
Vegetation: Native grasses, annuals, 400+ acres sub-irrigated meadows
Timber: The owner states that a cruise says there is about 10 mbf of timber
on the ranch. This has been selectively logged on a marginal area. The remaining timber will be left in the draws and ridges.
Enough timber will remain for good animal cover and
thermal cover. This will be logged to create an aesthetically
pleasing ranch. The owner has done this before and potential
buyers can see examples of what has been done. Both fir and
pine will be left for future harvesting if wanted. It is up to the
buyer to confirm the amount of timber on the ranch as it is in
...
the process of being selectively logged.
Water: Numerous creeks, springs, and ponds
Improvements: Corrals, barn, mobile home on county road
Noteworthy: Opal mine on Opal Butte--$7500/yr lease
Wildlife: This is absolutely excellent mule deer and elk hunting
Country!! This ranch is a great example of this. In fact,
we were talking with hunters who hunted the property.
There were 10 of them who hunted deer and they had all
filled their tags by the morning of the 5th day. They had said
that they had seen some other huge bucks and couldn’t get
any shots off. Also, they had seen “loads of elk”. One
hunter said he saw 10 spikes in one bunch and 6 six point
bulls at various times. They had seen rag horns and 5 points
too. In fact, the hunter said it was tough to hunt the bucks
because there were so many elk around. Five hunters were
allowed to hunt bulls on the property with all 5 taking bulls
with the smallest being a nice 5 point.Turkey and grouse are
on the ranch also.
LOPs: 6 Bull tags, 6 Buck tags…Heppner Unit
General: This ranch is bordered by both private and public land.
The public land is a no hunting area so all it does is raise
animals for the Opal Butte Ranch. There is more public land
to the east of Big Rock Flat. The forage is excellent
and the ranchers who have leased the grass would love to
come back.. A large number of cows can be supported for
the summer. This ranch is one, large contiguous piece of 10,000 acres with the remaining acreage right across a county road.It has no
public access or easements other than the county road separating the two pieces of the property. Most of the roads in the interior are
rocked. This ranch has seclusion, wildlife, meadows, timber,
access, water and beauty.
