Step up on the front porch and back into history. You can almost visualize standing there as a child waiting for the teacher to open the door to begin your school day. And in 1869, it was a long day beginning at 7 am and ending at 6 pm from November until May. Hundreds of students attended the schoolhouse until it closed in 1929.
When you enter this former schoolhouse, you can feel the charm and character seeped into every architectural element like the large, square paned windows and wooden beams in the living and dining rooms. The red clapboard and white trim schoolhouse with its bell tower stands as a vibrant beacon among the trees. This historic Flocktown Schoolhouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The schoolhouse has been rehabbed and remodeled to incorporate todays modern amenities with three bedrooms and three bathrooms. The entrance vestibule has 1-inch beadboard paneling with a coat closet and stairs going to the loft/3rd bedroom area. The loft area is perfect for a third bedroom or office with hardwood floors and a large closet. It overlooks the living and dining rooms. The beadboard paneling from the vestibule is continued into the huge open concept living and dining room which occupies the original schoolhouse area. Retention of historic details has been done throughout the home like the pot-bellied coal stove and even the original chalk boards that still occupy the same space. Hardwood floors and exposed wooden ceiling beams continue the charm of the home.
A side entrance has been added to the newer addition of the schoolhouse with direct access to the kitchen, family room and screen-in porch. The updated kitchen has a center island with sink and breakfast bar. The kitchen opens into the family room with a partial cathedral ceiling and a wood burning stove with a floor to ceiling brick surround. The family room has access to the screened-in porch and brick patio and backyard. The primary suite is conveniently located on the first level with new carpeting and a newer full bath. There is also a first level full bath and laundry room plus multiple closets for storage. A turned staircase leads to a large bedroom on the second level with full bath and vaulted ceiling. The tree-studded picturesque lot has an understated grandeur and rural informality.
This well-equipped property, renovated to a high standard, has retained all the charm of the former schoolhouse. Historic homes bolster community pride and retain a sense of place, time and belonging. And this home definitely preserves that legacy.
