Renowned builder Conrad Burgess began construction of the home as part of the former Presbyterian Union College, founded as the Union Academy in 1820. This was during the period when it was difficult to establish a permanent structure as native Americans repeatedly burned to ground several buildings in the area. The early period home retains the original wide plank, heart pine floors, hand hewn support logs, fireplaces, ornate moldings (reedings, acorns, and mantles), doors and rare period Carpenter locks. The 1/3 acre corner lot provides the perfect scenic backdrop with its noted location being the juncture of Pump and South Streets.

The rich land in the Union area was a prize for the early settlers and they soon established their homes here after crossing the Alleghenies from the Great Valley of Virginia. Long range views of the surrounding mountains and rolling hills add to the charm and grace of this remarkable home.
Low taxes, clean water, clean air and friendly people contribute to the areas exceptional quality of life.
Numerous and various species of migratory songbirds, blue birds and finches are found in the area. Their songs are easily heard as there is not much in the way of extraneous noises in the area. This lack of outside noise creates a very tranquil setting and is a rare find in todays industrialized world operating at breakneck speed.
