Hills Region, MS Land for Sale

The Hills region is located in the northern part of Mississippi and is an area rich in arts and culture. Music and literary history abound, including Elvis Presley's birthplace in Tupelo and William Faulkner's home in Oxford. The Hills region also offers many outdoor activities. Tishomingo State Park features canoeing and kayaking at Pickwick Lake, Sardis Reservoir and Grenada Lake. The Natchez Trace Parkway also runs through this region, offering hiking and biking trails.

DeSoto County is in the northwest corner of the Mississippi Hills region and is the third most populated county in the state. Southhaven is the largest city in this county and Hernando is the county seat. Other cities in this area are Horn Lake and Olive Branch. This county is very close to Memphis, TN, which is just across the border. The county's name is in honor of Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto, the first European to reach the Mississippi River. Geographic features in this county include the Mississippi River, Coldwater River, Arkabutla Lake and the Mississippi Delta Bluffs. Other attractions include the DeSoto County Museum, Hernando DeSoto Park and many golf courses in the area.

Lee County is located in the northeastern part of the Mississippi Hills region. It is named for General Robert E. Lee. The largest city is Tupelo, which is also the county seat. Other cities are Baldwyn, Saltillo and Verona. Tupelo is best known as the birthplace of Elvis Presley. Historically, Tupelo was a regional transportation hub, due to its location at a railroad intersection. It has now developed a strong tourism and hospitality sector around Elvis Presley's birthplace and Natchez Trace, which runs through the county. There are also successful manufacturing, retail and distribution operations; Tupelo has a large furniture manufacturing industry. The city serves as headquarters of the largest non-metropolitan hospital in the U.S. which serves people in North Mississippi, Northwest Alabama and portions of Tennessee. Tupelo us also a center for the arts and features several museums.

Lafayette County is in the center of the Mississippi Hills region. The only city in the county is Oxford, which is the county seat. The name honors Marquis de Lafayette, a French military hero and American general in the American Revolutionary War. Oxford is the home of the University of Mississippi, also nicknamed "Ole Miss." Oxford was the home to author William Faulkner, and his home, Rowan Oak is now a tourist attraction for visitors. Faulkner's fictional Yoknapatawpha County is thought to be based on Lafayette County. Oxford also has a thriving and diverse music scene.
