This 140 acre for sale by owner property is within the Red River Gorge area of Daniel Boone National Forest. Features of this property are large rock formations, waterfalls, trout stream, wildlife of all kinds, and a large cave system. This property was not acquired for the National Forest from the original owners during the depression because the owners were the original settlers on the property and they refused to sell. Even though it was during the depression, the owners had a profitable rural "business" of producing moonshine. The remnants of this business including barrels and original copper coils can still be found in one of the rock houses. We purchased the property from the heirs of these original settlers.
Other features on this property include:
A creek that runs the length of the property with intermittent waterfalls
One property boundary is a creek stocked with trout

Large rockhouses
A couple of rockhouse/caves large enough to building a house within
An old trail that leads up a crevasse to a point overlooking the National Forest. There is also supposed to be a Native American petroglyph at this point, but I have not found it.
Some older overgrown fields
An old spring that was developed earlier to provide a continuous flow of water to an old cabin site
But most intriguing is an navigable cave system. The cave includes many passages on many different levels and many that we have yet to explore. This cave has not been mapped so it is important not to get turned around as one could potentially get lost in it and a flashlight failure would be bad. In addition, we have observed this cave full of bats and due to our shared concern with the spread of the white-nose bat syndrome, we are limiting our, as well as guest activity in this cave.
This property is an historically mineral-rich area and there is timber including older walnut in the flat near the large creek. All mineral rights and timber rights convey.
The property lies within the national forest and is accessed via a gravel national forest road and gated with a national forest gate. Anyone entering the property with a vehicle without a key to the gate has and will be ticketed by the National Park Service. For this reason and the bat issue, we are being very careful about sharing this property location and access.
So there is a lot going on here at this property. Cave system, lookout bald access, large waterfalls and rock houses, trout stream, rock formations, fields, an old moonshine still in a rock house with a spring all within the National Forest near in the Red River Gorge - and lots more that we have yet to see.
