The ranch contains the original location of the historic Peg Leg Crossing of the San Saba River. The crossing was a favored Indian campground and entered written history in 1732 as the site of a Spanish-Apache battle. Spanish use of the crossing increased after the establishment of the nearby Santa Cruz de San Sab Mission in 1767. The crossing was later part of the Great Western Cattle Trail, and was used by the military both before and after the Civil War. As part of the San Antonio to San Diego stagecoach line, the site became popular with stagecoach robbers who would hideout at nearby Robbers Roost.

Wildlife

Approximately 600 acres of the ranch is high-fenced and has been game-managed for several years, with excellent high protein brush species across the ranch providing forage and cover for the abundant wildlife. The Whitetail population has excellent genetics with deer ranging from 180 to 200 Boone and Crockett. Other wildlife on the ranch include Red deer, Blackbuck antelope, Axis and Fallow deer, as well as turkey and waterfowl on the large lake. Hunting blinds and feeders are strategically placed throughout the ranch.

Water

Peg Leg Ranch is rich with water resources. The ranch has over a mile of tree-lined San Saba River frontage, with a half mile of both sides of the portion of the river that includes the historic Peg Leg Crossing and an over 100 foot long concrete dam. The ranch is also traversed by McDougal Creek which empties into the San Saba at the Peg Leg crossing. The creek has been dammed to create the plus or minus five acre lake below the main lodge. This lake is surrounded by a picturesque park like area that includes a dock, picnic table and a covered playground. This is also an excellent location to watch wildlife come for an evening drink. There is another large lake, two smaller lakes, and a fenced minnow pond. The ranch also has four water wells providing water to the lodge and homes and irrigation for the pastures, livestock and wildlife.

Farm

North of the river is Peg Leg Farm, plus or minus 259 acres with two pivot irrigated coastal fields and other cultivated fields for planting or livestock grazing. There are custom working pens here as well as a large-truck load out, the foremans home and several hay and equipment barns.

Lodge

Sitting atop the ranchs highest point, the plus or minus 7,000 square foot main lodge has stunning views in all directions including the five acre lake below. The lodge is constructed of beautiful light stone and has a standing seam metal roof. This impeccably decorated five bedroom, four and one-half bath lodge is warm and inviting. Upon entering, you are greeted by a impressive two-story foyer with a curved staircase and massive antler chandelier. An elegant formal dining room is connected to the entry space. River House

The River House sits on the banks of the scenic San Saba River just above the dam, causing the river to be wide and still near the home and providing the sound of running water as it pours over the dam.
