Secluded Upper Michigan Highlands Riverside Cabin for Sale! Where there are exciting things to do every day of the year! This property is nestled in the Foothills of the Huron Mountains, between the Bald Mountain chain to the west and Mount Benison to the east. The Huron Mountains straddle Baraga and Marquette Counties, and are the highest and most rugged terrain found in Michigan. These Highlands contain more state champion trees than anywhere else in Michigan. Mount Benison is located in the Anne and Cameron Waterman Preserve and features a series of granite knobs dominated by stunted white pine/red oak forest and one of the highest peaks in the area. In addition, the 1,381-acre preserve protects two Class I trout streams, including nearly ninety percent of the Mink Run watershed and the Cliff River. The Mink Run watershed contains several hundred acres of old-growth hemlock and white pine forests. The land is dominated by granite gorges and knobs, making it very rugged and difficult to travel. The property is home to several wildlife species such as otter, osprey, bald eagles, and numerous species of woodland warblers and thrushes. Its remoteness contributes to the viability of wide-ranging species such as wolves and moose. Varied rock, soil and topography combinations, plus the remoteness of the Michigamme Highlands contributes to outstanding examples of northern hardwood forests, open pine-oak forests on bedrock knobs, and mature pine forests, many embedded with sites of concentrated biodiversity. Many rare plants are found on either cliffs or bedrock balds. (This preserve is surrounded by private property and has no public access, but special access can be arranged.) Bald Mountain is at the westernmost point of the Huron Mountains and has three rocky outcroppings, an altitude of 1,184 feet, and a good view of the Huron River and Keweenaw Peninsula. There are higher peaks in the state, but few have the cluster of exposed and bald formations that this range has. The property offered for sale has 1,760 feet of Little Huron River running through it, where you can fish for Brook trout, Salmon, and Steelhead in their season. This river is an 8 mile long stream that flows entirely within Powell Township in northwest Marquette County, Michigan. It rises on the slopes of Mount Benison and Superior Mountain in the west end of the Huron Mountains. For almost half of its length it flows generally southwesterly then westerly as it is joined by creeks from other arms of its valley. It then turns north, flowing through gentler terrain to its mouth on the south shore of Lake Superior. The Little Huron River drainage basin, one of Marquette County's 22 watersheds, is 15.8 square miles. Much of the basin is in large tracts of corporate ownership, which allow walk-in access for hunting, trapping, and fishing. Less than a dozen private parcels abut or are bisected by the river. The property offered for sale is one of these. Parts of this special river (from unnamed bridge crossing located at the southern border of section 20 (T52N, R29W, S20) downstream to Lake Superior (T52N, R29W, S17) has special restrictive Brook Trout regulations. The sport fishery of river is managed for quality trout through a 20 inch minimum size limit and 1-fish daily possession limit for brook trout, splake, and lake trout. The harvest season for these species is from the last Saturday in April to September 30. The lower portions of rivers that connect to Lake Superior in portions of the Baraga, Houghton, and Marquette Counties offer good habitat for brook trout that periodically migrate into these streams from Lake Superior. Current distributions of lake-run brook trout in Michigan and elsewhere suggest that having protective stream and Lake Superior sport fishing regulations may lead to re-emergence of spawning runs of Lake Superior brook trout. The brook trout size limit and possession limits here will match those of adjacent Lake Superior waters. (Although separated by less than 1.5 miles at their mouths, The Little Huron River is not a branch of the nearby Huron River to its west.) At the mouth of the Little Huron are some of the finest sand beaches you will find on Lake Superior. To the north, about three miles out in Lake Superior's waters, is the Huron Islands National Wildlife Refuge and Lighthouse, and the Marquette Underwater Preserve, which has been protected since 1905 and were set aside by President Theodore Roosevelt! Boaters, Big Lake anglers, and scuba divers love to explore these areas that are being conserved and protected for public use. You'll also want to see another awesome natural feature in the Highlands - the "Cliff" or 40-Foot Falls which is located to the southeast of the property, on the Cliff River. This remote fast moving falls is about 50 Yards in length. Also in the area is walk-in access for hunting, trapping, and fishing in the surrounding Corporate CFA Land, and nearby Escanaba River State Forest Lands. Whitetail deer and other woodland critters regularly visit this property. The beautiful 1,367 Square Foot Cabin is lived in year-round by the current Owners. It features an Open-Concept Great Room with areas for relaxing, food preparation, and dining. This room features cherry, oak, pine, and poplar walls and trimmings, and a central wood burning stove with a stone and masonry chimney that reaches from the floor to the soaring cathedral ceilings.
