Salmon Trout Point is tucked between the quaint & historic village of Big Bay and the private member based “Huron Mountain Club”. Big Bay is only a 40-minute drive north of the City of Marquette and is best known for a local murder that inspired the best-selling novel, “Anatomy of a Murder”. Salmon Trout Point has a bit of history of its own. Once owned by the man who revolutionized the automobile industry, it was a part of his hundreds of thousands of acres of timberland used to supply the Big Bay sawmill. The sawmill manufactured wood panels to be used in its automobiles being mass-produced in Detroit, Michigan. Salmon Trout Point & the timberlands were also used to leverage membership into the adjoining Huron Mountain club; where Thomas Edison & Harvey Firestone were once members. In the late 1920s when the State Highway Department proposed a new trunk line known as “Highway M-35” to be constructed right through the infamous mountain club’s property connecting Big Bay to Baraga County, the owner of Salmon Trout Point worked successfully to stop the construction of the road through his own timberlands; which ultimately sealed the fate of M-35 from going through the club. Because of his success in halting the entire project, the club revered him as a hero and his long sought-after membership into the Club was granted!
Today, Salmon Trout Point stands in a quiet part of the world. It sits majestically high above the cool Lake Superior breezes of the untouched sandstone shoreline displaying immaculate vistas that most people can only dream of. The once bustling Big Bay sawmill has long been shuttered and Big Bay has evolved into a growing eco-tourism area for people who enjoy hiking, cross-country skiing, berry picking, boating, fishing and just the simple pleasures of being close to nature. Salmon Trout Point’s long-standing hardwoods provide a lofty canopy and is heavy and thick with an average 149 Sq. Ft basal area and an average 13-inch tree diameter.
