Meadow Wood was built 1885 by Frederick Hood for his bride of three years, Theo Harriett Beckham. Hood had emigrated from England just ten years before and found here the vibrant community of Frederick Hall in Louisa County. The Louisa Railroad had stimulated two hotels, a carriage manufacturer, a livestock market and a lively environs in which to get goods directly to larger markets of Richmond.
Hood elected to capture Victorian elements in his scalloped shingle cross-gable and in the bracketed deep eaves. The center hall plan provided the essential flow of summer breezes and visitors as he adapted to life in the South. Tall ceilings, heart pine floors, lovely scale and charming setting are still here today.

The house stayed in the Hood family until 1959. While preserving the original materials the house was renovated in the 1990s and upgraded in 2005 with modern plumbing, wiring, insulation and heating/cooling.
The entry level has parlor and dining room off the center hall front with kitchen and guest bedroom/full bath off the center hall rear. Four steps below and west of the kitchen is the large family room. The second floor has four bedrooms off the wide center hall two bathrooms. The master suite is exceptional. Uniquely, Meadow Wood has a small apartment in the English basement complete with fully functioning kitchen, bath, living area and laundry.
The farm is now 56+ acres of meadow and deep forest on a rolling terrain. The western boundary enjoys the steady flow of Little Elk Creek. There is a large 6-bay equipment shed, a small storage barn and a two-stall pony barn with fenced paddocks.
