These 530 acres that make up the Pennington River Ranch are full of an incredible variety and amount of wildlife that Ive not seen as much of on any other piece of land within an hour of Austin. The abundance must be a result of the untamed, crystal clear Llano River that the ranch borders for nearly a mile with 4,000 feet of frontage. The list of unique wildlife includes many quail, badgers, beavers, porcupines, an assortment of hawks and owls and weve even spotted Canadian geese and Bald Eagles down on the river. The way the river lays out currently gives an additional 51 acres of land up to the rivers bank. Each spring brings a blanket of wildflowers for a few months across the entire ranch including Lantana, Bluebonnets, Indian Paintbrush, and literally hundreds of others. Most of the ranch has fantastic large tree cover including trophy live oaks, pecans, post oaks, and elms. In fact, one of the live oaks is the largest Ive ever seen. You will see it as you drive into the ranch through the new entry made of raw steel and large stacked rock.

You enter the ranch through a brand new stacked stone and iron entry in the middle of the owned 2,390 feet of Highway 29 frontage. As you wind down past the massive Oak tree, you see the pecan, oak and elm trees that tower over 3,300' feet of Pennington Creek which runs water most of the year and is lined with a granite bottom. To my amazement, this creek is even home to beavers. Neighbors have said that in the 1800s there was even a gun battle along its banks between Indians and the US military. Past this creek if you look off through the brush to the right youll see Pennington Creek Cemetery which was established in 1885 - a year before Llano County was even established. There is lots of history here. The road will then take you over a historic railroad that has not been used in decades, but was really important in the late 1800s and early 1900s to ship cattle and granite. On the east side of the ranch is a railroad truss bridge high above Pennington Creek thats really unique. As you continue across the ranch toward the Llano River there are views of many different Llano mountains from all around the ranch including Little Murray Mountain next door, Packsaddle Mountain, Long Mountain, and the Riley Mountains. You feel so remote yet there are so many conveniences within a short drive of the ranch. After passing a massive granite outcropping, a reliable livestock pond, and a good seasonal creek youll come to the 1.5 acre lake for good fishing and duck hunting. Past that youll wind around and come to a cleared hill top where the views of the mountains and Llano River valley are incredible. Going down off this hilltop toward the river youll pass through a new 5 acre oat field which would also be great for sunflowers or milo. This helps to bring in the whitetail deer, whitewing & mourning dove, quail, and turkey - all of which Ive seen many times on the ranch. You can drive west and cross over a great seasonal creek thats lined with huge live oak trees and pecans. This creek drains into the Llano River and would make a great location for a big lake. Weve built a mile long trail around it for some fun hiking around the granite boulders that line it. After rains, this creek has a gorgeous 4 foot tall granite waterfall. If you follow the creek down to the river this is where the wild fishing action happens. There are Largemouth Bass over 8 pounds that have been sighted, the unique Guadalupe Bass, massive Catfish the river is know for, huge groups of Carp and the really cool Spotted Longnose Gar. It's a really relaxing and enjoyable place to flyfish for sure.
