The ranch is located roughly 50 miles east and a little north of Capitan with elevations ranging from approximately 4500 to 4900. Normal rainfall is reported to be from 15 to 18 however the current two-year drought has resulted in the removal of most livestock. The winter climate is good with little snow and requires only limited supplemental feeding (normally consisting of protein supplements during the winter and minerals year round).
Approximate acreages of the ranch are 4,822 of deeded, 18,942 of BLM, 1,800 of State Lease and 160 of uncontrolled for a total of 25,724 acres. The BLM permits for the combined ranches have a total carrying capacity of approximately 623 head of cattle and could be partially or completely converted to sheep.
The ranch has two large sets of working pens with truck loading chutes, working tubs and cattle chutes plus a hydraulic chute and a new digital scale at headquarters. There is also a large barn, two shops and an open shed with horse pens plus a new 30-ton overhead feed storage with 3 bins.
The perimeter fencing is woven wire and the cross fencing is mostly barbed wire with steel posts and includes 14 miles of new fence. There are 5 traps and 9 pastures ranging in size from 3 to 7 sections with each pasture having two or three water sources. There are nine wells that range from 500 to 800 deep. Two of the wells are partnership wells and four are new wells. Three are powered by solar pumps and the balance have submersible electric motors and pumps. Water is pumped to 11 storage tanks and then gravity flowed across the ranch. There are 35 new giant-tire drinkers with remote float boxes and 12 miles of new underground plastic water lines. Water and its proximity for livestock is the life-blood of any ranch and this one has both with less than one mile travel to water anywhere on the ranch!
The main home is large and spacious with three bedrooms, two living areas, a large kitchen, dining room, two baths and a car port. It is connected by a covered patio and enclosed yard to a bunkhouse with two bedrooms and a full bath that is an ideal arrangement for overflow guests. One living area has high beamed ceilings, a stone wall and fireplace. All three bedrooms have exterior doors opening onto a large covered L-shaped porch.
A second home which would be very suitable for a ranch manager is a modular structure with three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a large living area with fireplace and a car port. There is also a single-wide mobile home currently used for storage.
This area of New Mexico is home to many types of wildlife including mule deer, pronghorn antelope, Barbary sheep, quail, dove, bobcats, mountain lions, fox and coyotes.
The ranch offers great privacy but easy access to many activities. The headquarters is at the end of a well-maintained county road and is six miles from the nearest neighbor. It is only approximately 40 miles from the headquarters to Roswell which has the normal amenities of most cities. Ruidoso with its casinos, racetrack, golf courses, skiing and shopping is less than a 2-hour drive from the ranch.
