NYS year round home with beach rights on Beaver Lake for Sale: A nurse and police officer dreamed of owning a place in the Adirondack Mountains where they could take their family every summer to escape the hectic Syracuse city life. During the mid 50's they found a cozy camp for rent in the pseudo resort area of Lewis County called Number Four. At the end of the school year they would pack the station wagon with their 7 kids, pets and supplies and head 2 hours north to their summer getaway. The family enjoyed the area so much they decided to purchase their rental, also known as “Dart Camp #9”, in 1961. To present day, four generations have also shared the experience.

The camp was originally built in the early 1900's in conjunction with the famous Fenton House Hotel. Number Four was a popular destination for sportsmen and outdoor enthusiasts. Fishing and hunting in this area was, and still is considered excellent. Recreational activities for Fenton House guests also included tennis courts, a 3 hole golf course, a ski slope with tow line and numerous activities on Beaver Lake. As full time 'residents' of Number Four ourselves, my wife and I know why their family chose this area as their final destination....the crisp, clean air, vast green forests, numerous and unexpected wildlife sightings, spectacular starlit nights and water in every form you can imagine. If you like to hike, canoe, kayak, swim, snowshoe, ice fish, hunt, trap, fish, ride atv's or snow-sleds, or just enjoy the solitude, sights, sounds and fragrance of the great outdoors, yes, you'll find it here in Number Four.
Some 40 years later, in 2000, the owners transformed the camp into their home where they lived for the remainder of their lives. Remodeling the roughly 1,500 sf camp included: insulating walls and ceilings, revamping plumbing and electrical systems, replacing the flooring with knotty pine lumber and a lot of painting. Interior wall and ceiling finishes include paneling and wall board. The exterior siding is stained wood clapboards and the roof is painted steel. The main source of heat is a propane gas forced air furnace. Backup heat is provided through a wood stove insert in the living room fireplace. A dug well provides this house and three others with a clean, reliable source of water. The septic system is shared with two neighboring camps and has required little maintenance. A screened in front porch and an open picnic/barbecue deck out back are other enjoyable attributes of this comfortable home in the pines. The huge, 3 bay pole barn, with screened loft, provides abundant storage space and/or potential workshop/hobby site. The shed on the back side of the 1.5 acre lot once provided shelter for horses and sheep.
A short walk down the road and across a deeded access brings you to the shore of Beaver Lake. It may be here that you and your family spend much of your summer, enjoying every aspect of this wonderful Adirondack lake. Approximately one mile down the Stillwater Road is public access to Francis Lake where you can launch your kayaks or canoes. The Smith Road, a mile and a half to the west, is the local gateway to the 76,000 acre Independence River Wild Forest. The trail to Panther Pond, and the river itself begin at the roads end. Several access trails to the Pepperbox Wilderness Wild Forest are found to the east along the Stillwater Road, with Stillwater Reservoir and all the splendor of a huge body of water being found at the roads end. Your trip to the Reservoir would not be complete without a hike to the newly renovated Stillwater Mt. fire tower. Both the Stillwater and Number Four roads connect to snowmobile corridor trail C8. So much to explore, even those of us that live here year round haven't seen it all. Unique places like 'Dart Camp #9' do not come on the market everyday....Don't miss this great opportunity for your family to own an affordable place in the 'Park' in the midst of so many spectacular outdoor things to see and do!
