CUSTOM BUILT COUNTRY HOME
The original home was built in or about 1984. The owners grandfather was a house mover in central/north Louisiana. His advice was to build a house so you can jack it up and build under it. So this house was built with that in mind. He advised to double the floor joist under all the walls to give it superb strength and that is how it was done.
In 1997 this house was jacked up 10 feet and another house with 6 inch walls was built under it. The builder was known for excellent work and building for strength and detail. When he installed the aspen beaded board ceiling, it was installed with plywood backing for added strength. All the wood in the interior downstairs is all aspen or spruce from Colorado.
The walls in the den are 1 X 4 spruce which maintains the expansive 21 foot plus ceiling. The floor in the den and dining rooms is all cypress boards. The cypress was used because of it being softer wood allowing it to dent and give it a more homey feeling.
The kitchen floor is made from bricks gathered from all of the owners grandparents. Some are from Oklahoma, Missouri and Louisiana. One is from a Mississippi plantation home and several are Chicago bricks. A large number came out of the Buchanan sawmill that the grandfather of the owner removed when it closed down.
The trim around the island and the countertops in the kitchen was hand painted in California. The kitchen cabinets were custom built out of cypress by Dick Zeagler.
The house was one of the first in Louisiana to have central air with the new gas that was known then as puron.
