The ranch is nestled in a Pinon and Juniper forest with spectacular sandstone bluffs and rock formation, creating a landscape of dramatic contrasts. Chicosa Canyan in home to a countless variety of birds, including hummingbirds and the melodious Canyon Wren. Deer and wild Turkey are frequently seen, as well as an occasional Black bear and Coyote. Wointers are mild despite the 6500-foot altitude.
The historical value of the property is further enhanced by a published book of the diaries and photographs of William Riggs, who homesteaded the ranch in the late 1800's. The canyon walls bear the names (some dating back as far as the 1870's) of many Riggs family members. The book, Chicosa Bill, is a treasured glimpse into what life was like in Las animas County more than a century ago.
