The Hard H Ranch
360 +/- Acres
Knox County, Texas
At the end of a county maintained road in scenic northwest Knox County lies a remarkable tract of land - the Hard H Ranch. This unique property is surrounded by several privately owned cattle ranches, ranging from 10,000 to 40,000 acres in size, and has little to no hunting pressure around it. The land has been maintained by the present owner for several decades through rotational grazing and pasture grubbing, and is prime for a new owner to take over.
The property is cross fenced into four main pastures, each separated by long tree rows. The top three pastures consist of improved grasses, with minimal cedar. Some mesquite brush has come up over time, but in no way does it hinder your views or ability to navigate through the ranch. The property is cross fenced into four main pastures, each separated by long tree rows. The top three pastures consist of improved grasses, with minimal cedar. Some mesquite brush has come up over time, but in no way does it hinder your views or ability to navigate through the ranch. The bottom pasture is the largest and rolls down to the south, offering breathtaking views in all directions. Wide valleys, tall plateaus, and steep bluffs just beyond the fenceline give the Hard H the character of Old West scenery, without taking away from the productively of the land.
The ranch lies just a couple of miles north of the South Wichita River, and there are two main drainages going across the pastures. At the far south end, these drainages open up to deep ravines with extremely sharp ridge walls and beautiful rock outcroppings. Water naturally settles in pools at the bottom of these ravines, as it trickles out to the river.
The Wichita River valley is extremely scenic and is the first thing you'll notice when you enter the back pasture. In the distance, Panther and Grover Canyons abruptly pour into the river valley. Hunter Mountain and other landscape features can be seen in the far distance, all equally pulling your eyes into the horizon. Sunsets are truely a sight to behold across these peaks and are the perfect ending to any day on the ranch.
The Hard H has only been mildly hunted over the last few years, mainly for deer. This region has a solid population of whitetails, and a 167 scoring buck was harvested in 2009. The soil type on the ranch is conducive to growing winter wheat or rye, and there are several ideal places where food plots could be installed. Other game on the ranch includes feral hog, bobwhite quail, dove, wild cat, and coyote. With its long views, the ranch is perfect for rifle hunting and predator calling.
Improvements to the ranch include a rural water line ran across the pastures and four water tanks. This water line can be tapped onto to fill up stock tanks for cattle or wildlife, and is a guaranteed source of water. The many scenic views allow for multiple locations to build just a lodge or house. Electricity is available at the ranch's entrance.
