Located on the outskirts of Willmar and part of the “Grass Lake” habitat complex, this property holds multiple game species with its diverse habitat. The majority of the property has been enrolled into the state RIM program and is comprised of upland prairie grasses, newly seeded prairie grasses and wildflowers, low thick wintering seclusion cover, some wooded cover and open water areas. The entire “Grass Lake” habitat complex is just over 1,000 acres. The property and the area is comprised of a diverse mixture of habitat components and it is no wonder there is a high population of multiple game species. With agricultural fields to the north, south and east of the property and thick beddings areas, it didn’t surprise me to see deer and deer sign all over this property. There are multiple stand locations around the bedding areas and the potential to modify the conservation plan, the ability to cultivate some food plots or do tree plantings would only increase the attractiveness of this property. Pheasants? I couldn’t tell you how many roosters I heard cackling when I’ve been out to the property which doesn’t surprise me with the diversity of the habitat. The newly seeded RIM area will only increase the amount of nesting cover on this property. Waterfowl? Even though there aren’t large areas of open water, I have witnessed several ducks and geese landing in the open water “ditch” on the east side and the smaller water hole to the west of the wooded portion and there are a couple of newly restored areas. There is some land not enrolled into RIM allowing the possibility to build a shed and additional land is available if you have interest in building a home.
