Located on the Harvey County and Reno County line sits a historic duck hunting destination. Greenfield Lake was purchased from the Greenfield family by the Wichita Sportsman’s Association in November of 1887! This opportunity is more significant than once in a lifetime, it is once in generations, 138 years to be exact. A waterfowl’s dream, 44 +/- acres of pure wetland habitat. This geologic depression on the prairie landscape has been attracting waterfowl for thousands of years. Mallards, Widgeon, Teal, and Pintails visit this lake every fall by the hundreds and thousands. Situated just north of the Arkansas River, southwest of Patterson Lake, and several nearby sand pits, this couple square mile area is a world-renowned hotspot for migrating Puddle ducks, Lesser Canada geese, and Specklebelly geese. The shallow ephemeral marsh is full of plant species and invertebrates that ducks love to eat! Sedges, rushes, tubers, smartweed, and barnyard grass occur in massive quantities. Every September, these moist-soil species mature and produce seeds. The cold north winds that arrive with fall rains fill up the marsh and make the food available to the birds stopping in for a drink. This buffet of native moist-soil plants keeps the ducks around all season long and provides lifelong memories. This ecosystem cycle has been functioning and supplying heavy straps of ducks for generations. Though it’s hard to beat the waterfowl hunting opportunities the lake provides, the lake edges are thick with brush, scattered willow trees, and tall cottonwoods home to pheasants and quail. While walking out to the duck blind you will more than likely bump deer and hear Bobwhite whistles. Sunken pit blinds make concealment a breeze and keep you dry during inclement weather. Opportunities like this to purchase 100% waterfowl habitat this close to Wichita are unheard of. The waterfowling heritage this land embodies is felt in every step you take through the shallow water. The future is filled with a sky full of birds! Contact the Listing Agent Sean Thomas to schedule a showing (620) 712-2775.
