This home is located a few miles east of Kimberly, Oregon on Highway 405. The North Fork of the John Day River runs along this highway for about 13 miles from Kimberly to Monument. The home has approximately a half mile of river frontage that has two excellent steelhead holes. Also, there are bass and catfish that you can catch on the river in front of the home. There is a really nice swimming hole in the river on the property. It is also home to pheasants, quail, and chukars. Elk and deer come into the ranch at times. There are 41 acres of irrigated land to the north of the house. Two pumps from the John Day water the land. It has good water rights. The owner has not been able to irrigate due to health problems the last couple of years so it has been dry in those areas. If this irrigated land would be put in alfalfa or a grain crop like rye, oats, or barley, the elk and deer would be there in abundance. Also, if this were put into production then the upland bird population would skyrocket. There are also geese and ducks on the river. A BLM allotment adjoins the property consisting of 640 acres which costs about $54/year.
The home is situated in lush trees, shrubs, bushes, grass, and fruit trees. There is a large deer fenced garden area. It has not been put into production this year though. It is a huge area situated to the west of the house close to the fruit trees. Nectarine, pear, plum, peach, cherry, apricot and apple trees are in a little orchard. Grapes also are grown there. A nice green lawn area surrounds the home overlooked by a deck that surrounds the front of the house. There is a garden shed for grounds care.
A large shop is to the east of the house. Part of it is concrete flooring and part is gravel. The owner stores ATVs, lawn mowers and other small machinery in the graveled area. It has work benches and outlets for a decent shop. An open machinery shed houses the tractors and hay machinery. You can see them in the pictures that are on the site.
The owner states the house consists of about 3000 square feet. Two kitchens are in the home. She used one of them for canning with a full complement of appliances there. The main kitchen is moderately sized with an open airy attitude about it. The dining room runs from the kitchen goes to a fireplace room and then to the main living room. It is open and gives you a feeling of spaciousness but keeps the dining area and fireplace room a sense of coziness. The master bedroom is very large with a bathroom. There are two other bedrooms and one other bathroom. A stone fireplace takes up a good part of the wall in the area known as the fireplace room. The fireplace is burning all winter long and draws excellently. An office is also tucked away for your computer and record keeping.
Summers will be warm and winters mild. Snowfall will be light if you get any at all. The river freezes up at times and you can skate on it in front of the house. The county is a conservative county with agriculture and timber being the predominant occupations. John Day is the main city with Canyon City being the seat of the government. John Day has a new hospital and everything you need for the house or animals. In a sparsely populated county such as this you don’t have to wait at the post office or anywhere else for that matter. The county government is not in an adversarial position with you and really wants to help. (I know…hard to believe!) This property has a homey quality about it….the home is just super! It has water…a river, 3 springs, good well and lush surroundings. Hunting, fishing, or just enjoying the scenery is tough to beat. With the BLM adjoining you can hike or ride for a long ways. It is a very peaceful place with solid aspects throughout.
