More Information About Central East Region, FL

The Central East region of Florida is a long narrow region that extends north from Daytona Beach to St. Lucie Inlet in the south. There are only 5 counties in this region of Florida: Volusia County, Brevard County, Indian River County, St. Lucie County, and Okeechobee County. All counties except Okeechobee County offer beautiful sand beaches along the Atlantic Ocean.

Volusia County is home to the famous Daytona International Speedway but it is Daytona Beach that initially made Volusia County famous. Like other beaches to the north, Daytona Beach has sand that is smooth, compact and drivable. Close by is Tomoka State Park where the waters are popular for canoeing, boating, and fishing. The park protects a variety of wildlife habitats and endangered species, such as the West Indian manatee. Tomoka State park is also is a bird watchers paradise, with over 160 species sighted, especially during the spring and fall migrations.

Cape Canaveral is located within Brevard County and it is home to Kennedy Space Center. This area of the Central East Region offers fine beaches including 24 miles of undeveloped beach near the Canaveral National Seashore.

The southern end of this region includes the coastal towns of Sebastian, Vero Beach, Fort Pierce, and the fast growing Port St. Lucie. Close by is the Savannas Preserve State Park. This park offers freshwater marshes or "savannahs" that are still intact. This park offers outdoor activities including canoeing, kayaking, fishing, hiking, bicycling, and horseback riding.
