The Herndon Ranch has long been a staple to the Mount Vernon community and surrounding areas. The ranch has been owned by the Herndon family for well over 100 years and is for sale for the first time in since their ownership began. In the mid-1900's this property was converted to the cattle farm that it is today. An important event in Mount Vernon was the establishment of the community canning cabin. It was built by the government (WPA) and was located on the Herndon land in the northeast corner of the lake in front of the house. Some of the remains could be seen from HWY 36 until about 1990 when all visible signs were removed. People brought their vegetables and meats to the canning cabin. Then they assisted the people running the cannery in processing the vegetables and meats. The intense heat was almost unbearable. People would return in the evening to pick up the jars after allowing them to cool. The cannery was an important, exciting event to the people of Mount Vernon and surrounding areas primarily due to the fact that very few people had pressure cookers at the time. This process provided a way for the people to preserve their vegetables and meat for the winter. To add to the festivities, in the early 1940's the Grand Ole Opry performed in the front yard of the home with Minnie Pearl and her tagged hat in attendance.
