Duchesne County has an abundance of parks and outdoor recreational activities. There are hundreds of freshwater lakes with trout in Duchesne County, and over 1,000 such lakes throughout the Uinta Mountain Range.
To the west of Vista Valley Estates is the Uinta National Forest, to the north is the Wasatch National Forest, to the south and northeast is the Ashley National Forest!
About half of the Uintas is forested with fir, spruce, pine, and aspens. There are 545 miles of trails that you can hike, and you can see signs marking some of them as the old Spanish trails. The area's old Spanish gold mines are the stuff of legend. There are also nice campgrounds available.
Less than 40 miles away is Nine Mile Canyon. In the canyon is an incredible collection of Native American rock art, the greatest collection of rock art sites in the U.S.. Much of this art predates written history. One of the hunting scenes is the most photographed Native American rock art in the country. In addition to traveling the canyon by car, you can hike or enjoy mountain biking to the various pictograph and petroglyph art sites.
The Strawberry River is 18 miles long, most is protected by the Nature Conservancy. It is renowned for its trout fishing and is also a great location for whitewater sports. The land along the river is known for its dogwood and willow trees, is inhabited by elk, moose, deer, bear, and cougar.
From Vista Valley Estates you can hop onto Highway 40 and go to the Strawberry Reservoir area about 13 miles away. The reservoir has large cutthroat trout and rainbow trout. There are Forest Service campgrounds and other recreational facilities, paved boat ramps, and a restaurant.
Just a couple miles east of Vista Valley Estates Highway 40 intersects with State Highway 208, giving convenient access to Wasatch National Forest to the north.
You can also take Highway 40 further east to the county seat of Duchesne, Starvation State Park, and Starvation Reservoir.
Less than mile from Unit 1 is Red Creek Road. This is a scenic drive through beautiful Red Creek Canyon. In just a little over five miles you will come to the gorgeous Strawberry Pinnacles and can continue your scenic drive through Strawberry River Canyon.
