Dinwiddie County was formed May 1, 1752 from Prince George County. The county is named for Robert Dinwiddie, Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, 1751-58. However the first inhabitants of the area were in fact Paleo Indians, prior to 8000 BC. They are believed to have been nomadic hunter-gathers following animal migrations. Early stone tools have been discovered in various fields, within te county. The county raised several militia units that would fight in the American Revolution.
Nottoway County was first inhabited by native American Indians of the Iroquoian nation tribe called Nadowa. The Nadowa lived along the County?s only river and the name of their tribe became associated with the area they inhabited. This name was Anglicized with the coming of English settlers to ?Nottoway?. The County was the site of one battle during the War Between the States, the ?Battle of the Grove,? which was fought over control of the rail line in Nottoway (a line that served as a major supply line to General Robert E. Lee?s Army of Northern Virginia).
Dinwiddie and Nottoway counties have plenty of activities for all ages. Ft. Pickett is approximately 44,000 acres offering public hunting and several lakes for fishing.
