Property Summary:
The Solomon River Ranch is an exceptional find nestled on either side of the North Fork of the Solomon River in both Decatur and Sheridan Counties in NW Kansas. Like much of Kansas this area is known for exceptional deer and in this case trophy whitetails and mule deer are both real possibilities. There are several contributing factors to the quality of deer starting with the basic location around the river. River systems are well known for creating habitat that concentrates the big boys and causes them to have more predictable travel patterns. In this case the wooded cover on the river gives the bow hunter a tremendous advantage because of the tight pinch points at several locations in between the alfalfa fields. The river meanders east and west through the property and like many western Kansas farms there are crops right up to the river. Both the east and west neighbors to the ranch have planted their bordering fields in corn so this property is basically sandwiched in between corn fields. All of the bottom land on the ranch is in alfalfa except for one small field that's currently in cane. The south end of the ranch has a main draw running north to south with smaller finger draws running east to west off of the main draw. Several thousand acres with no public road access surround the southern portion of the ranch creating a secluded area that produces some incredible mule deer. Pictures of the most recent trophies taken are shown here including a 182" gross whitetail shot with a bow by the owners son last year and an impressive muley with a nice drop on the right side that was taken 2 years ago. With all this talk about deer don't overlook the abundance of turkeys that travel up and down the river as well. In the early fall when you are getting ready for deer season if the cold fronts hold off long enough to keep from pushing the doves out in early September I would put this place up with anything I've hunted in KS, OK, or TX for the volume of doves I saw the day before the opener. Prairie Chickens are also present as well as quail and pheasants but they are not abundant enough to emphasize as huntable numbers on this farm.
If you are an absentee owner looking for a place to hunt but you're not going to become a full time farmer/rancher then the son of the seller is very interested in leasing the grass back on a long term basis. The specifics of this could be discussed in detail if a buyer was interested in this option. Currently the alfalfa is being farmed 50/50 and typically has 5 cuttings per year averaging conservatively about 4 tons to the acre depending on rain. Last but not least the seller is offering 50% of the minerals to be transferred with the sale of the ranch. The minerals are leased but there is currently no production or drilling activity on the ranch. However the neighbor to the south had a drilling rig set up about as of Aug 31st 2012.
If you've ever dreamed of owning a place in Kansas with phenomenal hunting, income, a nostalgic farm house, and minerals then don't let this one slip away.
