Alison HouseCounty Road 47Carlowville, Alabama The Alison House was built in 1911 in what would become the historic district of Carlowville, Alabama. Carlowville is a small community is southeast Dallas County located approximately 65 miles from Montgomery, the state capital. In the mid 1800’s settlers moved to the area from the Atlantic seaboard of the United States and began building homes and churches. A portion of Carlowville was designated as the Carlowville Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places in January of 1978. There are approximately 21 historic properties in the area that contributed to this designation. Though many of the earlier home were in the Greek Revival, Colonial Georgian, or Federal styles, the Alison home pays homage to the Arts and Crafts styles and Bungalow style gaining popularity around the turn of the century. Beekman Lee Alison, who build the house chose not to use wooden siding for the exterior, but to clad the home in pre-cast concrete blocks that were formed to look like cut stone. The home also features a veranda that wraps around two sides of the exterior and ornate white concrete pillars. The home, which underwent major renovations in the early 1980’s, has been included in Selma historic homes tour and is featured in the book, Silent in the Land, on pages 114, 115, and 176. The Alison House sits on two acres of land and is located on County Road 47 in Dallas County, Alabama. A large entry parlor runs the entire length of the house dividing it in half. All of the bedrooms are on one side of the house and the kitchen and living areas are on the other. Beautiful hardwood floors and wood trim are original to the house.
