Bordered by 4,500 acres of National Forest, Canyon Rim Ranch features 39 home sites on 2,700 acres including portions of the Black Hills’ most scenic and historic canyon. The 39 lots are grouped in 7 neighborhoods, which are scattered throughout the ranch.  Home sites are predetermined on each lot, with the goal that no house will be visible from any other house.  Canyon Rim Ranch is a Wilderness Preservation Community located on the scenic Red Canyon, in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota. Canyon Rim Ranch is dedicated to the preservation of the wildlife and vegetation on the ranch.  No hunting or off road driving is allowed. Wildlife includes elk, mule deer, white tail deer, pronghorn antelope, coyotes, turkeys, sharp tail grouse, bobcats, and the occasional mountain lion. The views of undisturbed wilderness range from canyon overlooks to pristine forest to mountain meadows and wide-open spaces.CRR property owners share the Red Canyon Saloon and Social Club, as well as a horse barn and pasture, all of which are in the northeast corner of the ranch. Owners who have horses keep them at the ranch facilities. This reduces the need for outbuildings and fencing on individual lots, which might inhibit the flow of wildlife through the ranch. The topography of the ranch is varied, with meadows, hills and valleys, and deep ravines, some of which feed into the Red Canyon. Elevations range between 4000 and 4600 feet. The property is a little over an hour to Rapid City and conveniently equidistant to Custer and Hot Springs.

Recreation, Wildlife and Fishing:

With several national icons nestled among the pines of the Black Hills National Forest, this Island in the Plains serves as the backdrop for these symbols of America.  Specialized campgrounds, roaded recreation opportunities and a system of trails connecting communities, showcase this Forest that provides user friendly access to year-round family activities.  Together the attractive features of the Black Hills National Forest, Custer State Park, and area National Parks, Memorials, and Monuments are the foundation for the local recreation economies.

Amid the splendid scenery of the Black Hills National Forest are 11 reservoirs, 30 campgrounds, 26 picnic areas, 2 scenic byways, 1,300 miles of streams, 13,000 acres of wilderness, 353 miles of trails, and much more.

A herd of 1,300 bison roams freely throughout Custer State Park, often stopping traffic along the 18-mile Wildlife Loop Road. The herd is one of the largest publicly-owned herds in the world.

Bison can weigh as much as 2,000 pounds. Historically, the animal played an essential role in the lives of the Lakota (Sioux), who relied on the "tatanka" for food, clothing and shelter.

Besides bison, the park is home to wildlife such as pronghorn antelope, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, deer, elk, wild turkeys, and a band of friendly burros.

During the summer season, trout fishing is perhaps one of the most popular recreational activities in Custer State Park. The park offers four mountainous lakes worth exploring in this regard. Center Lake, Legion Lake, Stockade Lake, and Sylvan Lake comprise about 182 acres of crystal blue water and offer habitat for several species of fish.
