The new with the old was the vision for the kitchen of this 1855 home. The original kitchen can be found in the cookhouse behind the main home, but the kitchen addition was actually what is now the back porch. When the caretakers realized the beams for this room were 1800's hand-hewn lumber, their goal was to feature them in usable outdoor living space. The quartz countertop, farm sink, appliances, and island serve the modern family without losing the charm of the original farmhouse and are united with the original pantry, back scrolled staircase, tobacco sticks and bricks from the home.

Step into the parlor to find the original brick fireplace and mantel, along with the wallpaper, bookcase. Reflective light from the glorious fully restored windows welcomes all visitors. The addition of brass lighting and lotus-etched fixtures bouncing illumination throughout the room desires that one stay and settle in with a book from the library.

The large master bedroom has an on-suite bath with lots of room to spare. The beautifully crafted mantel and the original rose covered flue are set against the working fireplace. The backroom of the upstairs once used for storage and as an added bedroom was brought back to life to function as a sitting area, office, or additional bedroom with a very large wardrobe. The back stairs with the original door and lock will take you back down to the kitchen. Next up, is the spectacular master bathroom with its incredible design details. The upstairs original crafted Greek key mantel has been untouched by paint and remains in mint condition! What's a farmhouse - without some porches? The front porch has the craftsmanship of Thomas Day with Greek revival columns and windows. The porch swing provides perfect viewing of the property, while the side porch provides another place to steadily swing and rock while the bells and chimes sound off. The back-screened porch has the original kitchen flooring, structure, beams, tobacco sticks, and hanging hardware found in the cookhouse. The Thomas Day mantle from inside the kitchen was moved to the screened back porch off the kitchen.

Outside the home are the original roof, well, and siding. The tin roof is Taylor Company Philadelphia, PA with 15 pounds copper from the 1800's. The chimney on the left is original and bears the hardware for the former lightning rod for the home. The well house in front has two pumps and one is currently providing water to the house.

The cookhouse and salt (meat) house are perhaps the oldest structures on the property and the nails date the building to the 1800's. This land, which was once part of a much larger farm, was once used for tobacco farming and can be identified in the lingering aroma in the 2 buildings across the road.

Whether a bed and breakfast or private home, this estate is rich in North Carolina history that is still being discovered.
