Unit 13 is a General Hunting Unit and is roughly 304 square miles, of which about 75% of it is National Forest and/or public land. Terrain here is more gently contoured at lower elevations, but changes to steep and rugged in the Sierra Madre Mountains. Timbered slopes with a lot of upland areas are dominated by sagebrush, grass and mountain shrubs. Timber stands consist of lodgepole pine, ponderosa pine, and scattered pockets of aspen. This unit is arguably one of the most underrated units in the state. The elk population in the Routt and Medicine Bow National Forests is robust, with a reputation for producing trophy-sized bulls. The high-altitude habitat offers excellent foraging, contributing to the animals' impressive antler growth.
