The Gold Country region of California is named for the discovery of gold that led to the California Gold Rush. In 1869, the "Mother Lode" was termed and was referred to only five counties: Mariposa County, Tuolumne County, Calaveras County, Amador County and El Dorado County. In actuality more gold was later found in Placer County, Nevada County, Sierra County and Plumas County. This mountainous region of California is superb for any outdoorsman especially those who are hikers, backpackers and skiers. El Dorado County is home to Lake Tahoe, the most famous and heavily visited lake in the area and probably the entire state. A vacation destination for many and is perfect for waterskiing, tubing, or any type of boating. During the winter months some of the best skiing is nearby at Squaw Valley Resort, North Star Resort and Heavenly Mountain Resort.

Nearby in Calaveras County you can visit Calaveras Big Trees State Park. This state park is near Arnold, California and is preserving two groves of giant sequoia trees. Other attractions in the park are the Stanislaus River, Beaver Creek, the Lava Bluff and Bradley Trails. Visitors enjoy the vast amount of hiking and mountain biking as well as camping spots, and the great areas for bird watching.

In Mariposa County you can visit the Yosemite National Park. The park is famous for the giant sequoia trees, the views of Bridalveil Falls and the granite cliffs of El Capitan and Half Dome. The park offers numerous outdoor activities that include: camping, biking, bird watching, fishing, horseback riding and rock climbing.
