More Information About Central Valley Region, CA

The Central Valley region is a large, flat valley that is the geographical center of the state of California. It is 40 to 60 miles wide and stretches for over 450 miles. It is bounded by the California Coast Ranges to the west and the Sierra Nevada range to the east. The Central Valley region is California's single most productive agricultural region and one of the most productive in the world. The farms and ranches located in the Central Valley produce more than half of the fruits, vegetables and nuts grown in the United States. The water required to irrigate these crops come from the Sacramento River and San Joaquin River systems. These two rivers eventually meet and form the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta, a large system of interconnected canals, stream beds, sloughs, marshes and peat beds.

Included in the Central Valley Region are two national parks. Sequoia National Park in Tulare County and Kings Canyon National Park in Fresno County. These two parks offer giant sequoia groves and it is home to the General Sherman Tree which is the world's largest living tree. Visitors can enjoy many activities including hiking, back packing, camping, and fishing. Skiing enthusiasts should visit China Peak Mountain Resort located just 65 miles northeast of Fresno at scenic Huntington Lake.
