Elkins Wildlife Management Area Information:
The B & S Ranch in Brown County was purchased in 1992 and consisted of a little more than 1,000 acres. Not long after the purchase, we contacted the Texas Game and Fish Commission. Their biologist was sent out to evaluate our ranch. He inventoried the land and animals on it. They told us what we should do. We were seeking an Agricultural Tax Exemption as well as knowledge of how to produce a better deer herd. They gave us the buck and doe ratios and presented recommendations to us. They recommended that we only harvest does; unless a buck had an inside spread of 16 or greater and was at least 8 points or more, encouraging more mature deer. We agreed to these recommendations and made them a part of our hunting practices at the B & S Ranch.
Meetings were set up with other local ranchers in our area to discuss these recommendations for wildlife management. The other local ranchers volunteered to practice these same recommendations. One of these ranchers was Nancy Lee with the Lee Ranch, which was about 6,000 acres. Ron Ellis of Ellis Ranch, representing 1,600 acres, was also a part of this original group of local ranchers agreeing to this. This agreement between the local area ranchers created the Elkins Wildlife Management Area. The sign provided by the Texas Game and Fish Commission was provided for the front gate reflecting this agreement, and still hangs to this day. Meetings were held between the local ranchers willing to voluntarily practice these recommended wildlife management recommendations. We have continued these management practices to this day. Another part of our wildlife management program was to rotate the cattle off the ranch each year from September 1st until January 1st.
