Northeast Barton County Oak Savanna

Over 100 years ago, oak savannas and open woodlands were a common landscape feature in western Missouri. Early settlers wrote about the abundant game they encountered in the savannas - species such as deer, elk, and turkey attracted to the food and cover afforded by the mix of grassland and woods. Today game species still thrive in this habitat type, but so can cattle, sheep, goats, and horses. Species both wild and domestic are drawn to the rich grasses and wildflowers, while the overhead tree canopies provide shelter and shade. This tract has recently been restored to its former character, and already the prairie wildflowers are blooming under and among the scattered post oaks dotting the land.
