The warm simplicity and functional aspects of Federal architecture are at their best in this fine example of an elegant homestead, the second on this site, built in the new frontier of the Mississippi Territory in 1811 by a family destined to leave a major legacy of great homes, dedicated heroes, and fine citizens of the great state of Mississippi. It is a Mississippi Landmark. The property has an impressive and appropriate gate entrance, a charming entrance road, the main house, a three car garage with a one bedroom guest apartment above it, and an old barn . . . very picturesque and usable. Built in what is now known as a Mississippi Planter Cottage Style, Selma is a story and a half house with a distinctly different variation of the typical center hall four room floor plan. It has a wide front gallery running across the entire front faade but with a huge middle room in the front half with a master bedroom at one end and a library at the other: the back half has what were probably cabinet rooms on either end, and a back gallery between them, later enclosed as a dining room. The cabinet room on the left is a master bedroom bath and closet while the one on the right, with an addition, is the modern kitchen. One of the most charming architectural features of Selma House are the handsome twin staircases to the second floor off-of what once was the open gallery in the rear. The second floor has a large center room in the middle, repeating the first-floor plan, and two smaller rooms on either side. Another unusual feature is that the chimney stack on the left is on the outside and the chimney stack on the right is on the inside wall serving those middle and far right rooms back-to-back. The house has exquisite Federal mouldings, door and window surrounds, chair railings, and chimney-pieces, and beautiful wood floors . . . mostly original. It also has museum quality colors and furnishings. It sits high on a hill with commanding views of the fields and of Muddy Creek, a boundary line, from the luxurious front gallery. The grounds of Selma are wonderful rolling hills, large pastures, and forested areas.
