Upper Michigan Mountain-top Escape for Sale! This 160-Acre Wooded Property is located in Laird Township, in south-central Houghton County, in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. It sits high above the surrounding terrain and offers beautiful panoramic views! Off in the distance you can see Limestone Mountain, the only outcropping of Pre-cambrian rock in the western Upper Peninsula. The Sturgeon River Gorge and Wilderness is in the immediate vicinity. About 30+/- Acres in the south-east corner of the property is part of the Silver Mountain, one of the most highly scenic mountains in Michigan's U.P.! During the mining days of the 1840s and 1850s, prospectors attempted to find a rumored secret silver-lined cave and wall of silver in the area. They didn't find any silver, but evidence of an old closed off mine shaft and some buildings can be found at Silver Mountain. The Mountain is a 1,312 feet tall high glacially polished dome-shaped basalt bluff surrounded by Jacobsville Sandstone, younger sediments and glacial deposits. Because this promontory is located in the heart of the Ottawa National Forest, the Civilian Conservation Corps erected a fire tower at the summit to watch over the forest lands below, but that was abandoned when the Forest Service started using airplanes to detect fires. The tower eventually deteriorated, and was removed in 1971, but its ruined concrete footings still remain, along with the stairs up the mountainside. The mountain has a series of outcrops of bare igneous rock, which on the south side shows numerous 10,000 year old scars of glacier scour. These Cliffs average about 75 feet high; Year-round sports, slacklining, trad climbing, and top rope climbing are available here! The area also offers excellent opportunities to view raptors (migrating birds-of-prey) during May through June, and in September through October. Broad-winged and Red-tailed hawks soar on the strong updrafts of wind that flow up the mountainside. Smaller Sharp-shinned hawks and American kestrels can also be seen as they migrate through the area. The Silver River meanders through the western side of the parcel on its way north to join the Sturgeon River, which finally drains into Lake Superior. The property sale includes a very rustic vertical-log sided, steel roofed cabin. It features a native local sandstone fireplace, and could sleep about a half-dozen campers. The cabin can be heated with a wood cook stove or Lp gas wall unit, and there is a pitcher-pump for water. For bathing there is a traditional indoor wood fueled sauna. A small garage provides storage. There are trails throughout the property to explore, and allow you to take in hiking and blueberry picking!
